mum.com.au exists to answer one question for time-poor Australian parents: which one should I actually buy? Every recommendation and every “mum. Approved” badge on this site is the output of a deliberate, independent research process, and our founder and editor is accountable for every guide. Here’s exactly how it works.

Independent by design

Brands cannot pay to appear in a mum.com.au guide, to rank higher, or to earn a “mum. Approved” badge. There is no sponsored placement in our guides and no pay-to-play. The badge is earned on merit, never bought. If a product is the right pick, it’s because our research says so, not because of a commercial relationship. mum. Spotlight, where a brand pays for a reviewer’s time and the page says so, is separately labelled and is described below.

Enterprise-grade research, done for you

Comparing baby products properly is a part-time job: cross-checking specifications, prices, safety standards, recalls and thousands of owner reviews across dozens of retailers. Most parents don’t have time for that. We do it at a depth an individual shopper can’t practically reach, then distil it into a clear, honest verdict. Our research is assisted by modern tools, and every guide is reviewed by the editor before and after it is published; the full method, including the tools we use, is on our how we work page.

For each category we look at what actually matters to families: safety, value, ease of everyday use, durability and how well a product suits a particular stage (newborn, baby, toddler, kids), and we keep our research current as new models launch and prices move.

Anchored to Australia

Generic global reviews don’t help an Australian parent at the checkout. Everything here is local:

  • Prices in AUD, from Australian retailers. Our own price tracking checks retailer feeds and retailer product pages on a schedule, and every offer carries the date we last checked it. Where we cannot verify a current live price we show an approximate RRP and tell you so. We never present an estimate as a confirmed price.
  • Australian safety standards. We reference the relevant ACCC mandatory standards and AS/NZS requirements for each category (for example AS/NZS 2088 for prams and strollers, AS/NZS 1754 for car seats, and AS/NZS 2172 for cots).
  • Local availability. A product is only useful if you can actually buy it here.

What “mum. Approved” means

In each buying guide, the top picks we recommend carry the “mum. Approved” badge: up to three per guide, usually a best overall, a best budget and a best premium pick. The badge marks our researched recommendation in that guide, products we’d feel comfortable pointing a friend to after researching the field. It is earned on merit and never bought. It is not a guarantee of suitability for your family; it’s our considered, independent opinion to start from.

What we do not do

We do not test products in our buying guides. Our guides compare and recommend, built on specifications, standards, recalls, retailer information and what owners report, and we say so rather than imply otherwise. The one exception is mum. Spotlight: a separately labelled review in which a named mum on our team uses a product at home for a stated period, submits her own notes and photos, and approves the exact version we publish. Every Spotlight page states what the brand paid for, which is her time and never the verdict, and it carries a “mum. Spotlight” badge, never “mum. Approved”.

How we rank

Products are ordered on merit alone: safety, value for money, fitness for purpose and what owners report. Our rankings are never influenced by affiliate commissions or commercial deals. Where two products are close, we’ll tell you who each one suits best rather than pretend there’s a single right answer.

Always double-check before you buy

We research carefully, but prices, specifications, availability and safety information change. Before you purchase, please confirm the current price and details with the retailer, and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and Australian safety guidance for installation and use, particularly for car seats, cots and sleep products.

Its founder and editor built the research process behind every guide, sets the site’s editorial standards and reviews each guide before and after it goes live. If a guide is wrong, that is on the editor, and we want to hear about it.
